Case Studies
Industrial Distribution Center Network
One of the leading Industrial Supply Distributors has implemented WarehouseVision in all of their Distribution Centers. Their nationwide network of Distribution Centers ranges from 400,000 sq. ft. to over 1 million sq. ft. with over 250,000 SKU's in their universe. Their SKU's range from tiny parts to very large products of all shapes and sizes.
In addition to significawnt capacity improvements, productivity was improved by approximately 20% over previous slotting completed using other slotting software.
Implementation of their initial slotting requirements for all the Distribution Centers was completed by a group in their logistics department at the corporate level utilizing the WVPlanner module of WarehouseVision.
The WVAuditor module of WarehouseVision is implemented locally within their numerous Distribution Centers to properly maintain the DC's, keeping them optimized on an ongoing basis. As quantities and activities for items change, WVAuditor assists the users to identify item moves that would enhance and continue to optimize productivity and capacity.
They also use the WVNewItem module of WarehouseVision on a daily basis. When items that do not currently have an assigned location within a Distribution Center are received, they run the unassigned SKU through WVNewItem to find the most appropriate open spot in the Distribution Center.
WarehouseVision interfaces to both their legacy WMS system and their future ERP implementation.
Prior to implementing WarehouseVision, this customer conducted slotting with both internally developed software as well as other commercially available slotting software. The enhanced capabilities of WarehouseVision have led this client to standardize on WarehouseVision as their solution throughout their Distribution Network.
Large Hardware Co-op Distribution Network
One of the largest Hardware Co-ops has standardized on WarehouseVision as the solution to meet their Distribution Center slotting issues. Their network of 12 Distribution Centers ranges from 200,000 sq. ft to over 1 million sq. ft. SKU populations range from about 45,000 SKU's to 65,000 SKU's within the various Distribution Centers. As would be expected of a hardware inventory, their SKU's vary in size and shape from nuts and bolts to snow blowers, hot water heaters and other large, heavy items.
Because of the large range of Distribution Center sizes, the challenges each center faces vary considerably. In smaller Distribution Centers, there is insufficient space for storing all required products. In these centers, WarehouseVision helps maximize capacity as well as enabling them to bring product into the Distribution Centers from offsite storage. In larger Distribution Centers, space is less of an issue, but productivity is a large issue. In these centers, WarehouseVision optimizes product placement with a primary emphasis on productivity issues.
WarehouseVision allows optimization of productivity, capacity and other issues such as safety on a concurrent basis. In some cases, one of these factors dominates; WarehouseVision can accommodate those priorities. Because of easy user-definable parameters, WarehouseVision can deal with virtually any warehouse environment.
Industrial Distributor Branch Network
The leading Industrial Supply Distributor uses WarehouseVision to slot over 100 of their branches around the US. The size of these branches ranges from 5,000 sq. ft. to 56,000 sq. ft., and they contain as many as 50,000 SKU's. Implementation is managed by a centralized Branch Services Group.
The Branch Services Group uses WarehouseVision to process against their inventory file with an end result of placing the SKU's into proper locations to minimize the space required and to maximize the productivity of the branch warehouse operations. WarehouseVision is able to process as many sites as needed from one copy of the software.
After processing, Branch Services is also able to utilize WarehouseVision to create a Bill of Material for required racking. This automated feature saves considerable time in the procurement process for the racking and ensures the correct purchases for the ultimate implementation of the optimized branch storage configurations and product placement.
WarehouseVision is not only used to slot and optimize new branches, but Branch Services also uses WarehouseVision to slot and optimize retrofits within existing branches. In some cases, slotting of existing branches includes new racking for a fully optimized environment, and in other cases, productivity is optimized utilizing already existing racking, thus minimizing capital expenditures while still gaining efficiency.
In addition to optimization processes noted above, the WVCapacity module of WarehouseVision allows for individual branch and collective branch capacity reporting and analysis. This is crucial in the capital planning process.
Optimization of branches has led to as much as 50% reductions in capacity! In one case, a branch operating with product in the aisles and in outside branch storage was reduced to about 65% capacity while also optimizing for productivity at the same time!!
